In 1995, I stumbled across Puerto Escondido. My son was 8 months old and we were looking for a town to call home. The price was right and the apartment wasn't bad either (Diamante-Zafiro buildings) so we were immediatly comfortable here. I worked as a surf photographer for a few years on Zicatela beach, selling my daily photo shoot to the athletes themselves. The photography was fun, but the earnings were directly related to the waves per month. No waves, no work was a constant reality. I kept my eye on a few other expats who had already figured out what to invest in on the coast of Oaxaca, and that was land. And it wasn't long till I found my first parcial, a 399 M2 lot in the Rinconada Neighborhood. The price was right and the dreaming of our first home had already began. Later that year I married my wife Laura, after meeting her while she was working at a local shop in town, and our family was formed. The following year Laura gave birth to our daughter Alondra Crystel, and we were officially a full house. Myself, Laura, Mikey, and Alondra. It was about 2002 when we built the Bungalows Joyas del Mar project in Rinconada. It was a concept that I had come up with to build a couple of one bedroom vacation bungalows that shared a common place for hanging out. The project was a success, we finished over time and over budget, but were very happy with our results. A sure sign of a successful building project. After a couple of enjoyable years renting the bungalows, we were fortunate enough to find a neighbor who offered to sell us a commercial lot right across the street from the Bungalows Joyas del Mar project. So we picked that up and held it for a few more years until we were able to get a loan to build again. Since I had drawn up my own plans in the past with the Joyas del Mar project, I figured I could do the same for the new Brisas apartment Project, and that is just what I did. I designed a building that would offer two bedrooms, and more complete kitchens for extended stays. Again, the natural ventilation and shaded rooftop hangout let the guest enjoy the Oaxacan climate at it's best. The daily breezes do the work and the building itself directs the cooler air through each unit. The building also has two small shops streetside which are currently tourist related businesses. Nowadays Laura handling the rental business that we have created over the last ten years. She also sews all the curtains and couch cushions ect. She handles the maids and the laundry mat. Laura is such a great responder that she has enabled me to return to what I really enjoy, which is shooting surf video. I still answer e-mails, and keep everything operating and running smoothly from my office, or, better said, my beach chair. Happy travels, Eric and Laura |
