Puerto Escondido, which means "Hidden Port" in Spanish is a small port town and tourist center in the municipality of San Pedro Mixtepec in the state of Oaxaca, Mexico. It currently has a population of just over 40,000 inhabitants, but due to tourism feels much larger. The town was established over a hundred years ago as a fishing village with a small port for shipping coffee (which is grown nearby), although the area has been inhabited by indigenous populations for centuries. It later became a popular destination after Federal Highway 200 was built along the country's Pacific Ocean coast during the 1960s. The main attractions are the beautiful beaches and championship surfing. Surfers, Backpackers and an increasing year-round expatriate crowd are now flocking to this once hidden tropical paradise. Puerto Escondido offers a beach for every one's taste. Playa Zicatela is the main surfing beach, easily Mexico's most famous and ranked #3 in the world. La Punta provides a smaller, yet fun wave for the less experienced surfers. Marinaro has the perfect break for boogie boarding, and it's neighbor beach Playa Principal is a popular hang out for family tourists. Going north you'll find both Manzanillo and Angelito which offer restaurants, beach and boat tours. Heading even farther north you'll find Carrizalillo, (which is just two blocks away from our Brisas property) that offers the ideal setting for swimming, and when the swell is right, a great learner's wave for surfing. Bacocho is the final beach, home to a few larger hotels, and offering a long, expansive beach that is unfortunately not very well suited towards swimming or surfing. Puerto Escondido features a wide array of restaurants for all tastes and budgets and is close to interesting "Eco Tourism" options. |
